LECTURE

Week 1 - 30/9/2023
On our first day of typography lecture, Mr. Vinod have briefed us about what is expected in the module. He also mentioned that we have to create our own blog/ e-portfolio to display our work. He showed older students work to let us know what he should expect from us.

He gave us a few option for us to choose the words so that we can start digitize our ideas.

Week 2 - 6/10/2023
Our second day of typography lecture, we had our feedbacks from Mr. Vinod on our sketches that we have to do. We get to see many peoples ideas and their work. My feedback was about fixing the words a little bit then try it on adobe illustrator.

Week 3 - 13/10/2023
On week 3, we get to see everyone's digitization and were given the feedback on how we should make it better. He introduced us how to make our digitize typeface into motions. Learning how to create gif by using adobe illustrator and photoshop

Week 4 - 20/10/2023
Week 4, we learn about producing a text layout design. Kerning, paragraph spacing, point size etc. All have to be done in Adobe InDesign.

TASK 1 - TYPE EXPRESSION
We were given 4 words to compose and express by sketching out our ideas from those words. 10 typefaces were given for the digization phase to compose the letters that allows the meaning of the word to visible and motion.

fig 1.0 5/10/2023

It was really difficult getting the ideas for smoke since we can't distort it a lot. I noticed that smoke goes from thick to vanish into the air. This gives me the idea to make the words from small to big, changing the opacity to represent the smoke vanish into the air.

fig 1.1 5/10/2023

'Spooky' had me to think twice because I cannot think for one because it was difficult. The idea of spooky is that we are close together and aware when we are scared, so no. 3, 4 represent to it. No. 1, 2 is to illustrate ghost or Halloween season.
fig 1.2 5/10/2023

The first time I heard the word 'Impact' it gives me the idea of crashing or "start somewhere to achieve your goal". No. 1 , 4 gives the idea of a graph of us when we fall or rise to achieve the goal we want. No. 2 shows the letter A hit the letter C n T to represent impact. No. 3 is to represent newton cradle.
fig 1.3 5/10/2023

Power was a little difficult to come up with because I don't wanna make it too complicated. The simple or minimal I could go is by turn the O in no. 2 to a power button. No. 4 , made the letter E as a socket to represent plug.

DIGITISATION
After we have sketch our ideas for typefaces. We were assigned to digitize our sketch into adobe illustrator to make the meaning of our word to become visible - still and in motion.

fig 2.2 16/10/2023 Digitization

I start to digitize the typefaces that I sketch and seeing it finalizing, shows that my sketches are not impossible to create it. Hearing feedback on certain typefaces from Mr. Vinod makes a improvement by making it less complicated to see.

GIF
We will have to choose one of the typefaces that we digitize and turn it into a gif. This allow us to see the meaning words into motion.

fig 3.2 17/10/2023 Gif (first attempt)

I chose power as my gif because the E represent as the socket gave me the idea of plugging it in to turn on the light. This is my first time creating a gif using photoshop.

TEXT LAYOUT DESIGN - TASK 1A
This task we learned how to apply kerning, font sizes etc. in Adobe InDesign. With all the information that were given in his previous lecturer.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

Feedback: Turn the O in power for No.3 into a power button

Week 3

Feedback: Change socket from the E to just a wire sticking to the -E and for the gif, instead sticking the E to the R from the bottom, make it extended out from the W

Week 4

Feedback : Picture doesn't relate to the text and fill the space on the top right.

REFLECTION

Experience

This task was quite stressful because its my first time using Adobe InDesign which lead me to a lot of confusion when learning. The hardest part is applying the creativity into a work that I've never produce/ learned before.

Observation

The task for type expression is was straightforward but a bit of challenging seems its my first time ever doing something like this. For the text formatting layout, I understand a lot of how designers composition their work in details and I manage to be part of them too which is interesting.

Findings

I realize these task needed to have a good creative sense in which to know how to express the words and layout a page to connect the emotions with the person who reads this.

FURTHER READING

A type primer

This book is a guide of for new people/students that are getting started into graphics and typography. This book aim for a certain type of readers to understand the basic principle of typography.

This book is easy for me to understand because I'm a visual learner which is easier for me to understand and learn and as a first time studying typography.

This pages shows the specific parts of the letterforms. The component parts make it easier to identify specific typefaces.
